Can a movie be made in an interesting and crisp format in spite of having a huge star cast mainly composed of newbies? Debutant director A. Sargunam, who had his tutelage under Kireedom Vijay, has proved that a quality entertainer can be made with lesser known faces provided the movie has an interesting storyline with the right amount of twists. Apart from wielding the megaphone, Sargunam has also penned the story, screenplay and dialogues.

Music S.S. Kumaran

Realism is indeed the in thing is cinema today, especially with first-time directors, and A. Sargunam is no exception in the rule. The film, starring Vimal of Pasanga fame and newcomer Helen aka Oviya in the lead, is produced by Nazir (Madhavan's manager) under the banner Sherali Films. S.S. Kumaran of Poo fame has composed the music.

There is nothing new in the storyline: a boy and a girl from opposing squabbling villages fall in love. But the treatment the director has given to the script and narration makes the difference.

The Plot

Arikki (Vimal) is a vagabond and good for nothing youth, who always likes to gamble or hang out with his friends. Arikki also does some harmless minor heists and makes marriage proposals to every girl he meets. He is is pampered by his mother (Saranya) but his father (Ilavarasu), who works in Dubai, is unaware of all his activities! All is well until Arikki meets Maheswari (Oviya) from a neighboring village. Eventually they fall in love.

The villages from which the lovers hail have been at loggerheads since many years. Maheshwari's elder brother Ilango (Thirumurugan) is a tough and much feared man. Will the couple unite? What happens when Maheswari 's brother discovers about his sister's affair? All these are answered in a thrilling second half.

The Performances

For Vimalraj, this role is just a reprisal of his Pasanga chapter and he does it with ease. Newcomer Oviya is perfect for the role. Ganja Karrupu as Panchayathu needs a special mention for his wonderful comedy. Saranya, Ponvannan and Illavarasu excel in their acting abilities; Ilango as Thirumurugan deserves a special mention too; S.S. Kumuran's music is average and the camera work is brilliant.

Without any blood, violence or glamour, director Sargunan has managed to give a neat entertainer standing apart from his contemporaries.
